In a Gallagher Premiership clash that echoed the drama of a WWE main event on Netflix, Northampton Saints executed a stunning late comeback to defeat Saracens 28 - 24 at Franklin’s Gardens. This match not only showcased the Saints' resilience but also highlighted Tommy Freeman's exceptional form, strengthening his case for a starting position in the upcoming British & Irish Lions tour.
Saracens dominated the early stages, establishing a 19 - 7 halftime lead with tries from Tom Willis, Juan Martín González, and Alex Goode. They extended their advantage to 24 -7 early in the second half, appearing to have the match under control. You’re never really cruising in the Premiership.
However, the Saints, much like a resilient underdog storyline, mounted a remarkable comeback. Substitutes Jonny Weimann and Tarek Haffar injected new energy into the game. A penalty try narrowed the gap, and in the dying moments, Haffar scored a controversial match-winning try, despite questions over a potential forward pass in the buildup. Roll on Cardiff.
Tommy Freeman: Once again, Freeman demonstrated why he's a top contender for the Lions' starting XV. His dynamic runs, aerial prowess, and defensive solidity were instrumental in the Saints' victory.
Tarek Haffar: The prop's two tries off the bench, including the decisive score, underscored the depth and impact of the Saints' replacements.
Last Minute Drama
The match's climax resembled a movie, with Saracens playing the dominant heel, only to be upended by the underdog Saints in a twist ending. The controversial final try added to the drama, leaving Saracens "furious" and questioning the officiating.
Implications
Northampton Saints: This victory provides a morale boost ahead of their European Champions Cup final against Bordeaux, the fans were in great spirits post match, entering the pitch, greeting their heroes and enjoying golden hour after an incredible show was displayed in front of their eyes.
Saracens: The loss jeopardizes their playoff aspirations, leaving them reliant on other results in the final round. When you look at who Saracens have in their final round, a home tie vs already qualified, Bath… times are looking tough for the six time champions!
Tommy Freeman: His consistent high-level performances make a compelling case for inclusion in the Lions' starting lineup. The English winger shared post match that former Welsh legend, Jamie Roberts had reached out to him, offering his congratulations on his recent call up to the British and Irish Lions squad for the summer tour of Australia. If Tommy Freeman was to have even half the impact of Roberts in a Lions shirt, boy we’re in for a show!
In a match filled with twists, turns, and high-stakes drama, the Saints emerged victorious, much like an underdog overcoming the odds against the ever present domestic destroyers, I’m looking at you too, Crystal Palace. As the season progresses, performances like Freeman's will be pivotal in shaping both club success and international selections.
