This result serves as a boost for Romania after a tough summer and a reality-check for Canada as they continue to rebuild and refocus on growth.
Romania struck the first meaningful blows in the opening exchanges. Early penalty got the Oaks underway in the 2nd minute. They showed early control in territory and phases, forcing Canada to chase. By halfway through the first half the hosts already had established a steady lead through Conache’s boot. The pace of Romania’s forward work and the clarity of their attacking shape gave them an edge. Nelson hitting the upright for Canada to reduce the deficit too.
Canada, for their part, managed to close the gap in the half hour mark with a try under the posts. 12 -7 to Romania built a close contest for the rest of the half. Conache finally pushed another attempt from the tee wide to relinquish his 100% record for the day.
Coming out of the break, Romania maintained the momentum. They added a driving maul try after 2 minutes and Conache extended from the tee. 19 - 7.
Canada did push. Nearly responding 2 minutes later but a try disallowed for obstruction voided any momentum change. Povey going to a bunker review for a high tackle in the 54th minute allowed Romania to make the extra man count. Driving over a scrum but Conache didn’t add the extras 24 - 7.
Canada needed to respond quickly if they wanted anything from this game. It wasn’t lightning fast but still got the response in 67th minute. A converted try brought it back to 24 -14. But Tierney going to the bin for 10 minutes in the 71st stifled any Canada hope. The Oaks went throught the hands after the subsequent scrum, dotting down in the corner. 31 - 14 after 75 and Canada down to 14 men. Canada forced themselves over late on next to the posts from close range to make it 31 - 21. However, Romania’s composure and execution under pressure proved decisive: when Canada threatened, the hosts answered.
Romania
Strong performance: They executed their game-plan well—solid set-piece, effective forward platform, good territorial management.
Conversion of chances: Romania made the most of their opportunities and kept Canada under sustained pressure.
Growth sign: For a team often striving to regain momentum, this win is meaningful.
Canada
Fighting spirit: The visitors showed they can still carry attacking threat and they didn’t give up.
Areas to fix: They were too often second in the collision zone, lacked consistent control of the rhythm, and couldn’t turn pressure into long sequences of dominance.
Development stage: This result underlines that Canada remain in a rebuilding phase; there is potential, but also clear work ahead.
For Romania, this win is more than a tick in the box—it’s a signal that they can out-execute other Tier 2 nations and create a platform for consistent growth. They’ll aim to build on it.
For Canada, this match is a roadmap of the work required: greater consistency, stronger set-piece and breakdown work, and the ability to sustain pressure rather than respond in fits and starts. They have the ingredients, but need to sharpen the recipe.
Alin Conache was able to build a early lead off the tee for Romania and then controlled the game from there.
A contest that ultimately affirmed Romania’s upward trajectory and offered Canada a challenging but constructive lesson. For fans of international rugby beyond the top tier, this is exactly the kind of match that matters: meaningful, competitive, and full of implications.
